Joss Whedon, director of "The Avengers" and the creator of some of my favorite shows ever, has a history of writing strong women characters. Back in 2006, the organization Equality Now honored him for being a staunch ally for women. In his thank-you speech, he decided to talk about the tedious and vapid question journalists never stop asking him. At 6:25, I thought he nailed everything wrong with our culture, but then he takes it to the next level at 6:50 and hammers home the horrible reality.

"Equality is not a concept. It is like gravity."~ Josh Whedon's

People need to realise this. I loved how he put that question that every single person asked him. "Why are you writing such strong female protagonists?" in which he responds completely baffled by the question.
"What? What do you mean, why are other people not, how is this even a question?"
His body language just shows how he cant even fathom how this is still an issue, but we all know this is.
Being a girl who loves commics and avengers, i HATE it when guys come up to me and look at me as though i am this item at their store. This foreign species. Oh no, its a girl in a comic book store? She is probably just here for attention. .......... WHAT? Many times I walk in, I see men much older than me stare me down as if im some idiot.
No I’m at the store because i want this ironman and loki poster. Not because i want to feel like a nerd girl or whatever that is. "Gamergirl" That term is so awful. Imagine we did that with everything? TeacherGirl, Paintergirl, cashiergirl. Again.....WHAT?
I used to like big bang theory ALOT but I drifted away from the show because of its extreme stereotyping. Someone asked me why I’m not a huge fan of the show, To which i explain that a girl entered the comic book store, got stared down as if she was some shiny thing and then someone asked her if she was lost, which was followed by laughter. That was the joke.
WHAT?
I just want all these people to know, these very rude sexist guys that think they cant get a girlfriend because they are into nerdy things, is not true.( Superheros are not nerdy, they are cool btw) They cant get a girlfriend because they are rude and judge girls based on what they like. I don’t judge them if they like comics or categories them based on their gender, why do they do that to me?

She is probably just here for attention or looking for slutty cosplays. I have heard people whisper this about me and other girls. Many times I walk in, I see men much older than me stare me down as if im some idiot who does not belong at the store and treat me like im some fake fan.

I've never really understood that. For a group of people that often whine and complain about a lack of a female audience, they immediately attack and drive away any girls interested in their preferred medium. They treat girls only as objects, or prizes to be won, and then appear baffled when they actively avoid them.
