WORTH: 10% of your overall grade

Choose ONE equity issue we have discussed (racism, sexism, homophobia, poverty, body image, ageism, etc.) and prepare ONE (1) of the following reports:

A three+ page formal word essay/report on the issue, why it is a problem and what needs to be done to solve it.

OR

A ten minute lesson/lecture on the topic, to be presented in front of the class on January 21st.

OR

A ten minute video documentary / rant / short film / animation / journalistic investigation on the issue.

OR

A children's book, puppet show, kid's play, etc.

OR

Another way of sharing what you know, have learned, wonder about, or need to understand.

DIVERSITY
7%

DUE: to be announced
WORTH: 10% of your overall grade
Choose ONE place of origin for people who attend Espanola High School. Research recipes from their background and make one culturally-representative dish to share with the class.

You will need to prepare this at home and bring it in to the Foods Room BEFORE period 1 on the assigned date.

There will be 10-15 heating time but no cooking time before we all sit down for a potluck meal of world cuisines.

DURING THE MEAL, BE PREPARED TO EXPLAIN TO THE CLASS IN A WELL PREPARED SHORT (3-5 MINUTE) TALK

1) WHAT YOUR DISH IS

2) WHY IT'S REPRESENTATIVE OF ITS CULTURE

3) AND WHY TRYING FOODS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES IS AN ACT OF SUPPORTING DIVERSITY. IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT CAN YOU LEARN, WHAT CAN YOU GET FROM TRYING FOODS IMPORTANT TO OTHER PEOPLE.

You will EMAIL detailed recipes and instructions to Mr. Stewart at
stewarja@rscloud.ca

NOTE: If purchasing ingredients is something you might have difficulty with (transportation, access, finances, etc.), please let Mr. Stewart know and something can be worked out.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
8%

Choose ONE equity, diversity or social justice issue we have discussed in class and prepare an action plan with FOUR specific actions you can take to help deal with that problem.

Don't just say you could write a petition; draft the petition and even get others to sign it.

Don't just say you could do a sculpture in protest to a decision of government, make the sculpture or, at least, draw it in planning details.

The more detail you share, the more you ACTUALLY DO, the higher your mark.
